India and Zimbabwe Women Set for First-Ever Bilateral Series This October

India and Zimbabwe’s women’s teams will meet in a bilateral series for the first time in either side’s history this October, with Zimbabwe touring India for three T20Is in Raipur followed by three ODIs in Vadodara, a tour the BCCI confirmed back in May as part of its broader home-season calendar.

The Full Schedule

The T20I leg opens at Raipur’s Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium on October 16, with further matches on October 18 and 20, each starting at 7:00 PM IST. The series then shifts to Vadodara for three ODIs on October 23, 25 and 28, all starting at 2:00 PM IST at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium. Unlike the T20Is, which carry no points implications, the ODI leg forms part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2025-29, the qualifying structure that feeds into future ODI World Cups.

A Historic First Meeting

Despite both nations having fielded women’s international sides for decades, India and Zimbabwe have never previously played a bilateral series against each other at senior level. The tour marks Zimbabwe women’s first-ever visit to India for a bilateral assignment, making it a notable expansion of India’s women’s cricket calendar beyond its more frequent opponents in Australia, England and South Africa, and giving Zimbabwe a rare high-profile assignment on Indian soil.

India’s First Home ODI Series Since the World Cup

The series carries added significance for the Indian team because the ODI leg represents India’s first home ODI assignment since their ODI World Cup victory in November 2025. For a squad that won the sport’s biggest 50-over prize on home soil less than a year earlier, the Zimbabwe series offers an early opportunity to test how that triumph translates into form and depth against a different, less familiar opponent, away from the pressure of a global tournament.

Part of a Wider Home Season

The Zimbabwe tour was announced alongside venues and fixtures for a cluster of other series on the BCCI’s May 6 calendar release, including India A’s men’s matches against Australia A and an India Under-19 tour involving Australia’s junior side, both scheduled in overlapping windows. The clustering reflects how the BCCI increasingly bundles senior women’s, men’s A-team and age-group fixtures into coordinated release announcements, giving a fuller picture of the domestic and international calendar well in advance.

Two Perspectives on the Tour’s Significance

Supporters of the fixture have framed it as a meaningful step in broadening competitive opportunities for Zimbabwe’s women cricketers, who have historically had far fewer bilateral assignments against top-tier nations than their counterparts in Full Member countries with greater resources. From that view, even a series India is strongly expected to win offers Zimbabwe’s players invaluable exposure and ICC Championship points that matter disproportionately to a team working to establish itself in the 50-over structure. Others have been more skeptical of the tour’s competitive value, noting the gulf in current world rankings between the two sides and suggesting the fixture’s main purpose is to give India low-risk match practice and fill a home-season window rather than to produce a genuinely contested series.

What to Watch For

Beyond the result, the series offers an early look at how India’s selectors manage squad rotation and fringe player opportunities less than a year removed from World Cup glory, a period when established sides often use bilateral series against emerging opponents to test depth without risking core first-choice combinations. For Zimbabwe, simply securing competitive overs against a full-strength Indian side, and picking up rare ICC Championship points in the process, represents tangible progress regardless of the scoreline. With the T20Is starting October 16 and the ODIs running through to October 28, the tour gives followers of both teams a clear month-long window to track how a historic first meeting between the sides actually unfolds on the field. The ODI Championship points on offer also give the series a competitive edge beyond the headline novelty, since Zimbabwe’s results against a side of India’s caliber could meaningfully shift their standing in the race for automatic qualification to the next 50-over World Cup, a race in which associate-adjacent Full Members like Zimbabwe have historically had to fight hardest for every available point.
