Prithvi Shaw Named Maharashtra Captain For Ranji Trophy Opener Against Services

Maharashtra’s opening assignment of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season will not be led by their regular captain. Prithvi Shaw has been handed the leadership for the Elite Group C fixture against Services, which begins October 11 in New Delhi, with Ruturaj Gaikwad unavailable because of India A commitments in Puducherry, according to a report in ThePrint.

A Stand-In Job With Real Stakes

Gaikwad, Maharashtra’s regular skipper, was named captain of India A for a three-match unofficial ODI series against Australia A, with games scheduled for October 6, 9 and 11 — dates that clash directly with the start of the Ranji season. That left Maharashtra’s team management to find a replacement for at least the opening round, and they turned to Shaw, who was named in the 16-member squad announced on October 3 alongside wicketkeeper Saurabh Navale, allrounder Rajvardhan Hangargekar and seamer Mukesh Choudhary. It is a notable vote of confidence in a player who, two years ago, could not command a regular place in his home state side.

From Mumbai Exit To Maharashtra’s Leading Scorer

Shaw’s rise to a leadership role tells its own story. The 26-year-old opener left Mumbai, where he once captained the age-group and junior national sides and scored a double-century on first-class debut, to join Maharashtra ahead of the 2025-26 season after repeatedly losing his place in the senior Mumbai XI. The gamble paid off on the field: Shaw finished his debut campaign for Maharashtra as the team’s leading run-scorer, compiling 537 runs in 11 innings across seven matches. That return reestablished him as a serious red-ball batter after a lean patch that had cost him his India contract and, briefly, his place in franchise T20 cricket.

Group C And A Season-Opening Test

Services, the opposition at the Palam A Stadium, are a modest outfit by Ranji standards but have a reputation for disciplined, seam-friendly conditions on home soil in Delhi. Maharashtra have been placed in Elite Group C alongside Bengal, Jharkhand, Delhi, Gujarat, Kerala and Odisha for the 2026-27 season, a pool that includes two sides with recent knockout pedigree. The Elite division across all four groups runs on a seven-match league schedule before the knockouts, meaning an early stumble can be costly; a composed start under Shaw’s captaincy would matter well beyond the opening fixture.

Gaikwad’s India A Priority

For Gaikwad, the clash of commitments reflects the increasingly crowded Indian cricket calendar, where India A fixtures against touring sides like Australia A are treated as selection trials with Test and white-ball implications. Leading India A in Puducherry keeps Gaikwad firmly in selectors’ view for higher honours, even if it means ceding the Maharashtra captaincy, even temporarily, in the Ranji season opener. It is a trade-off increasingly common for India’s contracted domestic stars, whose availability for state sides first has to clear the India A and IPL preparation calendar.

Two Ways To Read The Call-Up

Within Maharashtra’s camp, the decision is framed simply as continuity: Shaw was the squad’s standout performer last season and, in Gaikwad’s enforced absence, the senior-most batter capable of leading. But the move also invites scrutiny from a different angle. Shaw’s career has been defined by swings between prodigious talent and inconsistency, and critics point out that a player still rebuilding his reputation after falling out of India’s plans carries different pressures as captain than as a specialist batter walking in lower down the order of responsibility. Supporters counter that leadership responsibility, handled well, has historically sharpened rather than burdened young Indian batters at domestic level, and that Maharashtra’s think tank clearly sees the Services match as a low-risk opportunity to test Shaw in the role before any longer-term decision is needed.

What It Means Going Forward

The immediate task for Shaw is straightforward: a composed four-day performance against Services to open Maharashtra’s campaign with points on the board. Beyond that, how he manages a dressing room containing more experienced campaigners will be watched closely by both Maharashtra’s selectors and, more broadly, by franchise scouts assessing his readiness for bigger leadership roles. Gaikwad, for his part, is expected to resume the Maharashtra captaincy once India A duties conclude, meaning Shaw’s stint is likely to be short. But a strong showing against Services, allied to his returning prolific domestic form, would keep Shaw’s name firmly in the conversation as Indian cricket’s selectors continue to monitor the Ranji Trophy for players capable of stepping into bigger roles at state and national level alike.
