SA20 2027: Joe Root Returns to Paarl Royals, Mitchell Marsh Joins Sunrisers Eastern Cape Ahead of Auction

South Africa’s SA20 league has unveiled its pre-auction squads for the 2027 season, confirming a wave of overseas movement that includes Mitchell Marsh’s competition debut with Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joe Root’s return for a second spell at Paarl Royals. The announcements, reported by Outlook India and CricTracker, set the stage for an auction that was scheduled for October 7, 2026, at which four of the league’s six franchises filled their remaining squad slots.

The Big Overseas Moves

Marsh’s arrival at Sunrisers Eastern Cape marks his first involvement in the competition, adding a genuine allrounder option to a franchise that had only two open slots and a comparatively modest remaining purse of R9.35 million heading into the auction. Root, by contrast, is a familiar face at Paarl Royals, rejoining the franchise for a second stint. Sam Curran has moved to Durban’s Super Giants, while Phil Salt has linked up again with Pretoria Capitals, giving that franchise continuity at the top of the order heading into a season where it had five slots and just R1.475 million left to spend.

Joburg Super Kings Part Ways With Faf du Plessis

The more emotionally charged story out of the pre-auction reshuffle is Joburg Super Kings releasing Faf du Plessis, who had captained the side for four seasons since the league’s launch. He was released alongside Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger, leaving Joburg with the largest remaining purse of any franchise at R20.6 million and six slots to fill — the most significant rebuilding job of the four teams still shopping at the auction table. MI Cape Town also moved on from senior figures, releasing Trent Boult, Kieron Pollard and Rassie van der Dussen, with du Plessis, Mulder, van der Dussen and Burger all entering the auction pool as available free agents.

The Numbers Behind the Auction

Of 789 players who originally registered for the SA20 2027 auction, only 156 were shortlisted to go under the hammer. Paarl Royals and Durban’s Super Giants had already completed their squads before auction day, meaning only Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals were active bidders. League rules cap squads at 19 players including one wildcard pick, with a maximum of seven overseas players, a minimum of 11 South African players, and at least two Under-23 players required per roster — rules designed to balance star power with pathway opportunities for younger domestic talent.

A League Still Finding Its Identity

Du Plessis’s departure from Joburg after leading the side since SA20’s inception is a reminder that even a young league — this will be its fifth season — is already cycling through its founding generation of captains and marquee signings. Some South African commentators have framed the Joburg rebuild as a natural changing of the guard, arguing a franchise needs to refresh its core every few years to stay competitive; others have questioned whether releasing a four-time captain mid-cycle sends the wrong signal to fans who have followed him since the league’s first ball. Both views reflect a broader tension in the SA20 model, where overseas stars rotate between multiple global leagues each year and long-term loyalty to a single home franchise is increasingly rare.

Scarcity at the Top of the Market

With Paarl Royals and Durban’s Super Giants arriving at auction day already full, the real competition was concentrated among just four franchises chasing a relatively shallow pool of proven finishers and overseas allrounders. That scarcity tends to inflate prices for the handful of marquee names still available, a dynamic South African broadcasters have flagged in previous SA20 auctions where a small number of bidding franchises with large remaining purses, in this case Joburg Super Kings with R20.6 million, can end up driving fees well above a player’s base price simply because so few direct competitors for a signing exist elsewhere in the room.

What’s Next

With pre-auction squads finalised and the October 7 auction now behind the league, the final season rosters will come into sharper focus over the coming weeks as broadcasters and sponsors ramp up promotion. SA20’s fifth season is scheduled to open on January 17 at St George’s Park, with the final set for February 21 at Newlands — giving franchises roughly three months to build chemistry around newly added names like Marsh and Curran before a ball is bowled.
